Understanding the Periodic Table of Elements
Periodic Table of Elements
The periodic table of elements is a table which shows the arrangement of chemical elements ordered by atomic numbers in columns and rows. It was invented by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 to determine the periodic trends in the properties of elements.
The elements are listed according to their increasing atomic numbers. Rows are arranged in such a way that elements with similar properties fall into the same vertical columns. The groups or columns are numbered 1-18. The arrangement is Group 1(alkali metals), Group 2(alkaline earth metals), Group 15 (pnicogens), Group 16(chalcogens), Group 17(halogens) and Group 18(noble gases). There are some groups that enjoy non-systematic names as well. Not only are the groups in the periodic table, some other groupings of elements often named as well. They are lanthanoids and actinoids.
In 2006, the periodic table contained 117 periodic elements. Out of these, 92 are found naturally on earth, and the rest are artificial elements.
Structure of a Periodic Table
To arrange elements in a periodic table, the chemical properties with the electron configuration of an element is determined. The total number of electrons present in an element determines to which period it belongs. The orbital where the electrons reside, determine the block to which it belongs. And the number of valence shell electrons determines the group or family to which it belongs.
The elements with the same number of valence electrons or outer shell electrons are grouped together. As we progress from the lightest element to the heaviest element, the outer shell electrons or the valence, are all in the same type of orbital, with the same shape.
Groups and Periods
The vertical columns in the periodic table are known as the group, and are the most important method of classifying elements. Elements with very similar properties are grouped together and they are names according to the trend in properties, like alkali metals, alkali earth metals, halogens and noble gases.
The horizontal row in the periodic table is known as the period. This is also a type of classification of elements where the horizontal trends and similarities in properties are more significant than vertical trends.
Although Dmitri Mendeleev is the person responsible for creating the proper periodic table, there are other scientists as well who have contributed to its development. In Mendeleev's original table, each period was of the same length. But modern periodic table of elements have longer periods down the table and group the elements into s-, p-, d- and f- blocks to help us understand better.

27 Ways to Decorate for Christmas
25 Things to Use for Christmas Decorating
It's that time of year again! Doesn't it feel as though you've blinked and it's once again time to haul out the strings of lights, the pretty Christmas bulbs and ornaments, and the holiday displays?
Perhaps you are tired of your traditional Christmas decor or would simply like to try your hand at decorating a few more rooms of the house.
We have 25 fantastic suggestions for sprucing up your holiday decor this year.
1. Wreaths are a traditional decoration for Christmas, but the style of wreaths available today for the holidays are anything but traditional. Pine cones, pine boughs, and grapevines are all excellent foundations for Christmas wreaths. Decorate your wreath with birds, poinsettia blooms, berries, mini Christmas ornaments or bulbs and lights.
2. Battery-operated Christmas lights are ideal for hanging wreaths in any area of the home and avoiding unsightly electrical cords trailing down the wall. (Especially the new LED style of lights that last longer than traditional battery operated lights.)
3. Are you really creative? Create a Christmas wreath from past holiday-themed neckties, linen napkins, or even mismatched Christmas ornaments and ribbon for a look that is uniquely yours.
4. What is Christmas decorating without a Christmas tree? Most homes feature at the very least a large tree in a central location of the home, such as the living room, dining room, or den. Consider adding smaller Christmas trees in different areas of the house to bring cheer to every room. Older children would love to have a small tree in their room to enjoy throughout the holiday months. Christmas lights come in every size, shape, and color imaginable today, so get creative and have fun when choosing the lights for your tree this year.
5. Outdoor Christmas displays are fun to create and they're enjoyed by not only your neighbors, but by the people who purposely go searching for holiday displays on a cold winter evening. Simple displays such as a Nativity scene and a few angels are always a lovely addition to your holiday decorating plan. Want to go all out? Create a winter wonderland in your front yard complete with Santa's sleigh, reindeer, snowmen, and snowflakes. Decorate your home, trees, and shrubs too using net lights, rope lights, icicle lights, C7 and C9 lights to add holiday cheer to the outside of your home.
Here are some other great ideas for decorating your home for Christmas.
6. Pine cones - fantastic nestled in pine boughs on windowsills, in bay windows, or lining the fireplace mantel
7. Holly berries/bittersweet - windowsills, nestled in the grapevine tree or wreath, on the mantel or around the base of a large pillar candle in the middle of the holiday table
8. Mistletoe - every doorway, of course! Real or fake - go for it.
9. Christmas quilts - pull out your beautiful Christmas quilts and place them in a basket beside the fireplace, over the back of your rocking chair, on table tops, and other prominent places in the house
10. Christmas table runners, tablecloths, napkins - wonderful for decorating the holiday table, small foyer tables, bedside tables, buffets, hutches, and sideboards
11. Christmas centerpieces - dining room, buffet, entertainment center, den
12. Lights of every kind, shape, size, and color - wreaths, centerpieces, doorways, holiday trees, windows, child's bedroom, fireplace mantel, Nativity scene, and anywhere else that seems to strike your fancy (don't forget the garage and garden shed!)
13. Garland - strung around the banister, doorways, and tops of large windows
14. Bows - on the Christmas tree, along the fence, on the front door, or the garage door to name a few options
15. Candles - on the fireplace mantel, the dining room sideboard, master bedroom, den, in each window, and in the foyer
16. Homemade ornaments
17. Christmas cards
18. Popcorn strings/cranberry strings
19. Ribbons with sleigh bells attached and adorning the banister
20. Christmas wrapping paper - cover your every day artwork with Christmas wrap for instant holiday cheer in any room
21. Nativity scene
22. Advent wreath and calendar (have you seen the new Lego advent calendars?)
23. Grapevine trees with twinkle lights - on the porch, in a sunroom, in the 4-season porch, large bathrooms, or in a bedroom.
24. Holiday villages - if you haven't started to collect a holiday village set, consider purchasing a few pieces in a set each year and watch it grow.
25. Trains and train tracks - surround the Christmas tree or put it around the perimeter of a room for visual interest.
26. Decorate your front porch, patio, balcony or deck with lights, garland, and red bows
27. Lighted Christmas signs
Christmas is a wonderful time of year, filled with family, friends, and delicious goodies. Holiday decorating can be a fun activity for the entire family when you think outside the traditional ways you've decorated in years past. In our fast paced world take on the challenge to build some memories with your family that will last.

How Video Games Improve Your Education
Something that a lot of people don't believe, but it's true, is that video games actually bring benefits to people that play them, more specifically to their minds. There is more to these games than pretty graphics, good music and plots that emerge the player in the game's world.
1. Strategic thinking is improved by playing video games. When you play a game, you need to take decisions in advance and plan the next few steps that you're going to take. Playing games constantly allows people to develop their strategic thinking skills and these skills can be applied to real world situations.
2. By playing video games, your problem solving skills are improved. While you can say that about every game out there, video games are proven through studies to be improving the skills of solving problems. Almost every game out there has as a main focus a problem that needs solving in a challenging manner, provoking the player into thinking how to do it. By playing a single game, a player can have anywhere between a couple and a couple of hundred problems that need solving.
3. Eye and hand coordination are improved by video games. To test this, take a game controller and move the character inside the game. Maneuvering a mouse and a game controller ask for the same skills from the player.
4. Taking decisions quickly is something that is facilitated by video games. The impromptu situations is one of the factors that leads to this quality. Wherever you are in a game, you never know what will happen next, which makes it exciting for the player. If players want to win the game, they need to take the best decisions possible on the spot, without much time to think about it.
5. The imagination is stimulated when you play video games. People that argue that video games are bad for people are wrong and are usually limited in their imagination or never tried actually playing a game. One argument of these people is that games provide the things to the mind instead of leaving the mind to imagine things. The same people believe that a Lego set is all a kid needs to grow. We totally disagree with that. What a video game does for the player's imagination is truly great and it encourages him to dream more.
6. Exploration is encouraged in games. In RPG's for example, you need to go and explore the world ahead of you, seeing the unknown and learning about it. Opening a door and not knowing what you will find or the consequences of your actions encourages people to get used to exploring and learning.
7. Exercising the memory is also encouraged by video games. Players need to memorize the terrain, always knowing which way they should head next and what places offer the best rewards or the most challenging enemies.
8. Video games allow people to learn that actions have consequences. Every action taken by a player has a consequence and the player needs to live with it.
9. Endurance, dedication and patience are just a few of the things taught by video games. You can't finish a good game in a single day. The games that are most appreciated will usually take weeks to finish.
Video games offer a lot of possibilities to the mind of those that play them and listed here are just a few of them.

History of Lego Star Wars
Lego Star wars has quite the interesting history when it comes to the fact that the game entertains children everywhere. It all stems from the popular plastic building blocks that can be used to build cars, space ships, buildings, and whatever a child's imagination can think up. Anyone under the age of 60 has most likely played with Legos, so that means that many of the children playing with them today have grandparents who once used their imaginations to do the same exact thing.
The Lego saga began in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, where a carpenter by the name of Ole Kirk Kristiansen began a new business that made wooden toys, stepladders, and ironing boards. What no one realized at that time was that Legos had been born.
It was in 1934 that Kristiansen created the name Lego, which is derived from "leg godt," which are the Danish words for "play well." However, in Latin, the word Lego means "I put together." Unfortunately in 1942, the plant burned down and Kristiansen had to rebuild, but just two years later, Kristiansen's plant purchased an injection molding machine that created plastic toys, but he was yet to invent the building blocks.
It was in 1949 that the Automatic Binding Brick was introduced for sale only in Denmark and looked like a tiny plastic brick with eight or four studs. However, by 1950 the Lego accounted for half of the company's business. From then on, the Lego began spreading around the world and through the years had developed various themes such as sets that focused just on building cars or on just building buildings. The possibilities were endless.
However, the Legos of today are much different than the Legos both we and our parents played with. Our children are playing with Lego theme parks, there are Lego themed movies, and there are even Lego themed video games that are based off of particular toy lines created by Lego. One of those toy lines is Lego Star wars, which later led to the Lego Star wars video game.
The video game was first released in 2005 and is based during the prequel trilogy to the actual Star Wars Trilogy that began in the late 1970's and early 1980's. However, the game was actually released a month before the last of the Star Wars films was released.
It was developed by LucasArts and Eidos Interactive for the Sony PlayStation2, the Microsoft Xbox, and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It was also developed for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. In August 2005, A Mac port was developed for the game to be played on Mac computers and in October 2005, a version was released for the Nintendo GameCube.
Lego Star Wars received the Kidsworld.com award of Game of the Year and received very good reviews. In May 2005, it even peaked at the top of the charts in the UK to eventually lose its prominent spot to the Episode III game that was later released. However, its position as a top game for kids remained high for quite some time.
In September 2006, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy was released and a year later was followed by a prequel game released in November 2007 called, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Some deem the Lego Star Wars video games as the coolest games in history and they consistently receive ratings between 4 and 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars on many gaming websites. The games are great for children and are a great way for the Lego legacy to live on through the electronic world.
The purpose and vision of the Lego Star Wars is to inspire children to explore and challenge their own creative potential. Mastermind Toys offers educational toys for babies and toddlers.

Gears of War Action Figures
The video game finally makes an impact in the collectibles scene with NECA's release of Gears Of war action figures. After the success achieved by the huge Xbox 360 franchise, a decision was made to bring GoW toys to the ever booming market. Popularity will continue to grow as there has been word the game is soon to become a movie, as well as the confirmed finale to the series; Gears 3 to be released in April of 2011.
Action Figures Series One
The first release of toys based on the massively exciting Xbox 360 game was made public in the middle of 2008; much to the delight of fans nationwide. NECA was able to recreate some stunning, high quality figures which were lifelike and as close to those characters in the game as possible.
This first set included Marcus Fenix, Delta Squad leader as well as fellow COG Augustus Cole. Not to mention the two horrible (in a good way), Locusts, Locust Drone and Locust Snipe. A box set was made readily available for fans, as well as single boxes of each character. These also included all extra accessories and a head that could be substituted for either Locust.
Series Two
After the first series' success, NECA was given the go ahead to create another set of Gears Of war toys; which were released later on in 2008, November. Promising signs were shown in terms of added articulation, quality was maintained and the figures please many fans.
Four new additions were added, Dominic Santiago and Damon Baird (fellow COGs) as well as the Theron Guards, Marcus Fenix received a touch or two and was released once again.
Series Three
The third set of NECA's toys were released at the beginning of 2009. Four new in game characters were transferred to be created as real world models.
Once again a new version of Delta Squad leader, Marcus was released - he had received some note able retouching, requested by fans. A COG soldier (who I believe is Benjamin Carmine) was created, as well as a Theron palace Guard, Locust grappler and variation of the Locust Cyclops. Once again, the figures included in game accessories and weapons.
I own and regularly blog about Gears Of War Figures [http://www.gearsofwartoys.com/]. There is a lot more to learn about Gears Of War Toys [http://www.gearsofwartoys.com/]!

Fallout 3 Caps
Fallout 3 is the ground-breaking, best-selling video game from Bethesda Softworks. The game is like no other, in that you start off the game as a small baby, and follow his life right up until your 19th birthday, when you are allowed to leave the vault, in order to find your father, who mysteriously disappeared.
In the post-apocalyptic world that the game is set in, bottle caps are now the currency (all remains of Dollars, Euros and Sterling have long-gone). Bottle caps work in the way that you would expect - one cap is essentially the same as one Dollar.
Earning Fallout 3 caps is a tough but necessary part of the game, since you need money in order to buy things, such as new weapons or health-related items. There are, however, some easy ways to quickly acquire a large amount of caps. Firstly, you can make a lot of caps by selling cigarettes and pre-war money - both can be found fairly commonly.
There are certain perks that you can gain to help you build up your collection of Fallout 3 caps. For example, if you have the 'strength' perk and the 'strong back' perk you can carry more items at any one time. This will shorten the amount of trips that you need to take to do anything, meaning you can earn more Fallout 3 caps faster. Also, if you have assigned perks so that you're good at lock picking, you can find a house in 'Minefield Town' that has a tonne of loot inside the safe, just waiting to be robbed. You'll need to be good at lock picking to open the safe.
One of the best and most easily repeatable ways of making money is to hunt creatures, and then sell their meet on to customers.
